She was a little girl, whose frail frame betrayed her poverty. But yet her name is Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, what a misnomer. Later I was told that all she survived on, was a single roti a day. I needed nothing more to prove how her name was totally against the conditions in which she has to survive. Her raised collar bones, her protruding ribs, all told the story of deprivation bordering destitution. Further she had 3 siblings, and the responsibility of bringing them up was all upon her mother…who did odd jobs to keep the stove burning… When asked…Lakshmi told that she had no idea why her father had been jailed…but yet she knew why she and her family had to suffer ….because her father was a drug addict..!!

Good morning friends,
Today I stand in front of you to talk about an ancient land…… A land witness to saints and victories, a place where martyrs have laid their lives for the sake of the nation. A place with unparalleled culture, people, vigour, color and music... I am talking about Punjab…

From a last few years Punjab has been in a TROUBLE it has never been in before… No I am not talking about an EPIDEMIC of a disease, but I am talking about the NEXUS of drugs in Punjab

The drug menace in Punjab is something a lot of us are not aware about…but take a look at this estimate… About 73.5 percent of the young population in the state is brutally addicted to drugs.. Moreover according to an estimate of the state health department… Every 8 out of 10 young boys have once in their life consumed drugs.. And every 2 out of 10 young girls have once in their lives have had drugs..!! IN THE Cities like Patiala, Amritsar, Bathinda and Jalandhar… you can find people, locally known as “smackias”,AT bus stops, railway stations and chemist shops …selling drugs for as low as 25 rupees..!! But before going too deep inside the topic, let us understand what drug addiction really is and why do people get addicted to them. Basically drug addiction is a complex brain disease, characterized by uncontrollable and at some times compulsive urge to take drugs…which persists even in the face of highly negative consequences. Now let’s see why people take drugs…

Going by what the drug addicts have to say..
Taking drugs gives them a certain high. Consuming drugs gives them increased heart rate, a kind of confidence which make them feel that they are at the top of the world.it enhances everything…from sex to conversation. But then all these feeling are really short lived …as soon (break) you start feeling paranoid,(break) or a little bit agitated in the absence of the required dosage. Sooner than an addict can realize..

Drugs start to mess up with his mind
He starts to lose his ability to think clearly , (break)to learn and to study properly. He may have a feeling that after the consumption of drugs, he may feel that he is more aware and sound, but the truth is just the opposite. He starts acting a very different way, and his attitude and behavior becomes really unpredictable. And the worst part is that these drugs stay in the system of the addict for a lifetime, and you may think otherwise, but though an addict may lose drugs…but he can never lose the traces those drugs left over his mind. Moreover the harmful effects of drugs over one’s body too are innumerable. They cause a wide variety of diseases ranging from hepatitis c to HIV aids. Malnutrition amongst drug users is also a very common site (break) and to all my friends who think that using drugs showcase”s” their masculinity;(break) believe me scientific studies show that drugs highly decrease your fertility rate. But then don’t we all know these negative effects of drugs. Have’nt our mother’s throughout our lives told us stories of drug addicts ruining their lives. But then why do drugs still arouse such a craving in our minds, why do we still choose to fall in the abyss of drug addiction, Let us analyse some of the reasons..

The first reason I came across in my...
