Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience they should support drug addicts going to hospitals rather than jail for help. Central Idea: To persuade my audience they should support judges mandating drug addicts to go to hospitals instead of jail. Introduction

I.Attention Step: Imagine going from a good student to a student addicted to drugs. You never intended for that to happen but it did and you can’t go back in time to stop it from happening. You get arrested and put in jail because you’re doing drugs that are illegal. Would you rather be thrown in jail or placed in a hospital where you could get help and get your life back on track? II.Credibility Material: While working on this speech I have done tons of research on this topic. After reading expert opinions and articles, I have gathered an assortment of information that I will discuss with you today of the benefits of drug addicts being put in hospitals instead of jail. III.Relevance to Audience: According to nber.org approximately 33% of college students use drugs. They all can potentially become addicted to drugs. You could be friends with someone who is an addicted to drugs now or who soon will be addicted. Would you want your friend to sit in jail and not get the help he or she needs or would you want them to be put in a hospital where they could be treated? IV.Sign Posted Preview: Today I will first discuss how a hospital can benefit a drug addicted person. Second I’ll talk about how a drug addicted person would be treated in jail. Lastly, I’ll discuss what can be done to help this issue. Transition: A person addicted to drugs is classified as ‘sick’ or ‘ill’. Sick and ill people go to hospitals for help.
