Drug addiction is one of the most concerned issues all around the world. Either consuming or trading drug in some countries are strictly prohibited. For instance, ‘January 2009, Yong Vui Kong, a Malaysian was sentenced to death in Singapore for trafficking heroin’. However, the restrictions or even the punishments seem to have failed remediating this issue. Drug trafficking among teenagers has been increasing rapidly and immediate ‘remedies’ are indispensable to prevent further societal consequences. Other than governmental efforts, family and school who teenagers spend most time with, play important roles in dealing the mentioned issue.
In term of family, parent is our strongest influencer. ‘Spare the rod and spoil the child,’ best described it. However, nowadays, most of the parents are either over coddle or neglect with their children. Substantially, this partially caused the drug trafficking issues among teenagers. Other than providing shelter, parents are also responsible in guiding their children to live the right way. Other than being the exemplars, immediate actions such as reporting the involved parties to the police or sending their drug taking children to the nearest rehabilitation center whenever a drug trafficking activity is spotted. Hesitation will only further deepen the ‘pit’.
School is the second place where teenagers spend most of their time at. Although we have been learning about the dangers of drug abuse since our elementary school, curiosity incites our desire to try consuming drugs. Therefore, further preventions such as anti-drug campaign should be held more frequently. Other than instilling the teenagers by creating the awareness, supports and guidelines should be provided too by the counselors whenever any drug related activity is disclosed. In addition to academic, students’ doings and attitudes are also to be supervised to better improve the drug trafficking issue.
