Aphorism Argument Essay

Unique, different, inventive, individualistic. These words share one thing in common; they are all characteristics of a good leader. Leaders are not afraid to step outside of the norm in order to formulate a new idea or to stand for their personal beliefs. Similar to organism’s dependence on water for sustenance, leaders are chief constituents to human life. Leaders facilitate a positive change and are therefore essential to the evolution of human existence and development. Many historical figures who ventured to go “where there [was] no path,” exemplify great leaders and subsequently epitomize Ralph Waldo Emerson’s belief of individuality.

Leaders aspire to stimulate progression in society through their nonconformist attitude and innovative mindset. What then is a leader, when a person who dares to experiment or acquire a solution through untraditional means is deemed an outcast? Society, a mosaic in the eyes of a leader, contains many different textures, different shapes, and different colors; however, they all orchestrate to form one beautiful creation. In the same way, society has many different needs, different characteristics, and different views; it takes a leader, through their inventive methods, to create that harmonious image. Once orchestrated, advancement becomes favorably possible. Had President Abraham Lincoln decided to succumb to the slave holding status quo of the pre-Civil War era of the early 1800s, poor innocent people may have continued to be bruised and battered through the crime of slavery. Many can argue that it takes a real man to defend their moral standings; Emerson would certainly agree due to his well-known belief that “whoso would be a man, must be a nonconformist.” In which case, Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird’s Atticus Finch are the finest of men.
