Marijuana Should be Legalized in the United States

After a fair amount of research, I’ve come to the conclusion that marijuana should be legalized for both medical and recreational use for adults. Marijuana has been illegal in the United States for over 75 years and it’s apparent that the drug is not going anywhere. Despite the efforts of the federal government attempting to completely get rid of marijuana, it has become a large part of our economy. Instead of taking advantage of that and letting it remain illegal, we should instead tax it and help pay off our national debt. Not to mention it would provide tons of jobs. The outcome of the illegality of marijuana has so far created a black market, filled prisons with non-violent criminals, and wasted taxpayer dollars. The legalization of marijuana would eliminate all those things and would also let us take advantage of cannabis being the largest cash crop in the United States. A) Prohibition has failed to control the use and production of marijuana.

According to, marijuana is now used by over 25 million people annually. Marijuana is also without a doubt the most frequently used drug in the United States and appears to be on the rise. The results from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health states that in 2011, there were 18.1 million past month marijuana users, and an estimated 16.7% of past year marijuana users aged 12 or older used marijuana on 300 or more days within the past year. This translates into nearly five million people using marijuana on a daily or almost daily basis over a one-year period. This same survey also states that in 2011, an estimated 39.1% (17 million) of current marijuana users aged 12 or older have used marijuana on 20 or more days in the past month.
