Before starting this essay I would easily have stated that “marijuana should not be legalized”. That I have read and re-read many of the articles and claims about what it does and does not cause. In George Bierson’s article from the Massachusetts News he concluded that marijuana is the “Deceptive Drug.” He is just one of many who say that it is harmful in a variety of different ways from causing brain damage, affects and weakens the immune system, can affect your fertility and reproductive system are just a few. It has long been called the “gateway drug”, and would have you believe that if you are a user of marijuana, eventually it will not be enough and you will move on to “harder” substances/drugs such as cocaine, or heroin. There is no more evidence about marijuana users becoming addicted and then going on to cocaine, heroin, or other illegal substances than saying if you use tobacco or alcohol, and the facts about addiction to these are proven, will cause you to seek harder drugs. If we look at Holland, marijuana has been partially legalized since the 1970’s, however; reports show cocaine and heroin use has decreased. Claims that marijuana is getting a bad rap and everyone has an opinion whether you are a user or not, marijuana is not totally harmless either. There is always media fervor whenever the subject of marijuana is brought to the public attention. It is still a very controversial issue, especially in states where it is placed on the ballot for voters to legalize or decriminalize it. Some of the claims that float around about whether or not to support the issue are: Marijuana is no more harmful than tobacco or alcohol if used in moderation. Legalization could mean lower prices and related crimes such as theft would be reduced. The use of medical marijuana is viewed favorably by many Americans, including members of the medical community and some members of congress.
