Cognitive benefits include learning basic self-defense concepts such as directions of movement, proper striking surfaces, the advantages of leverage over muscle, and situational awareness. Students can greatly expand their psychomotor abilities by applying these cognitive principles through the physical actions of proper stance, movement, balance, and basic blocks, strikes, and kicks. Students can also experience tremendous affective development. Students are first introduced to anxiety management, persistence in skill practice, honest effort, and a discussion of why fighting is always the last answer to resolve conflict. Over time, the key values of social support, responsibil ity, and self-discipline evolve, as novice learners become intermediate students. Eventually, team unity can emerge as students work together to support one another in training.
