Drug cartels started by recruiting family members to keep the business going, but now as cartels have expanded in the United States they will recruit anyone in order to make their cartel even stronger. Usually, the cartels would recruit people with experience in the drug world, but recently they have been targeting young adults.. Young adults are influenced to join the cartels by a variety of factors, including narco corridos, the lure of easy money, a desire to escape poverty , or coercion. History of Cartels
In the 1980s, Colombian Pablo Escobar formed one of the richest cartel in Colombia, the Medellin drug cartel. Pablo Escobar was the main exporter of cocaine all over the world. Mexico did not have any cartels at that time only Mexican smugglers, but the man who gave birth of all Mexican drug cartels was a former Mexican judicial federal police agent named Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo aka “the godfather” (wiki ,par.4) Miguel angel Felix Gallardo formed the very first cartel in Mexico, the Guadalajara cartel run by him his cronies and politicians who sold him protection and many family members. He controlled all the illegal drug trade in Mexico and the United States throughout the 1980s. He started off by smuggling marijuana and opium in the U.S and later became the main source for the Medellin cartel headed by Pablo Escobar. Then the birth to other cartels formed as Gallardo decided to divide different parts of Mexico drug trade to family drug lords to operate for him and for law enforcement agents less likely to bring down all the drug trade. It separated into three parts the Tijuana Cartel led by his nephews, the Arellano Felix brothers , the Gulf Cartel ,and the Sinaloa Cartel, run by former lieutenants Hector Luis Palma Salazar, Adrian Gomez Gonzalez and Joaquin Guzman Loera “El Chapo”. As many of these cartels had disagreements each cartel started operating differently and tension began to escalate. The Sinaloa cartel started conquering many states in Mexico, others cartels wanted to do the same but they wanted to take the Sinaloa Cartel out first. When Sinaloa Cartel leaders during the 1980 Hector Salazar and Adrian were captured, Joaquin Guzman stepped in. From then on the Sinaloa Cartel has been headed by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman , as other cartels targeted the Sinaloa cartel , Joaquin had more power and became associate with the second most wanted drug lord man in Mexico Ismael Zambada. Forming a partnership with Ismael together they made the Sinaloa Cartel stronger than ever now having 17 states in Mexico under control and 3 big cities states in the United States like California, Atlanta, and Chicago. As their rival the Gulf Cartel started recruiting Mexican military officials they began rising to power slowly and soon formed a group called Los Zetas which one of the most violent cartel known. Los Zetas started to take over states as well, along the borders and made its way into the United States in the states of Texas, and California. Smugglers and cartels have continued to import drugs into the US because United States has one of the highest demands and levers of drug consumption. As The war on drugs soon started to rise up , many new cartels began to form and Mexico’s corruption gave birth to new cartels trying to control territories of Mexico . As new cartels started forming, they needed recruiters in order to gain as much members as the big cartels have in order to defend and protect their turf. Cartels not only recruit gang members or involve family member but a new trend of recruiting started and their focus now is young adolescent males. At this point cartels main point is to have control and power. This new trend for teens started developing since 2008; Mexican drug cartels targeted male teens...
